Trace Element Factor In Endemic Goitre Area Near Merapi Volcano

Abstract

Trace elements analysis of environmental samples and human body suffering from iodine deficiency in districts near the Merapi volcano have been done. The name of the districts are Sawangan and Mungkid , both are located in Magelang at Central Java Province. The people of Sawangan were treated as the investigated patients and that of Mungkid as the control. The persons treated as patients were clinically examined, the object of which is to indentify their biopsy, thyroid hormones level (T3,T4,TSH,TBG) and goitre status. All the patients examined were women of 17 to 45 years old. They were of low social status and of low income, who were not pregnant nor breast-feeding. The individual’s goitre was classified based on the. Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) scientific group classification. . The environmental samples were drinking water and soil, while the human body samples taken were urine, serum and human hair. Samples were analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and electrochemical methods. Experimental results showed that: iodine and flourine contents in urine of the patient of Sawangan were lower than that of Mungkid. The content of other elements such as Rb, Ca, Pb, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn of the patients of the Sawangan were greater than that of Mungkid except for Se and Mg where the former were less than the later. Selenium content in the human hair and serum of Sawangan’s patient was considerable but lower than that of Mungkid’s patient. The flourine content of drinking water in the investigated area of Sawangan was 210 mg g-1, while that of the control area of Mungkid was 169 mg g-1. The iodine content of the soil sample was significant. The results of the total diet observation during one week in 1991 in the two districts show that: daily iodine intake that has an effect on human body is 0.65 and 1.69 mg per kg weight. The effect of weekly intake of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Rb on the patients who live in both districts was inconsiderable, except for the K intake in Mungkid district was greater than that of all of the groups.
