Abstract

ABSTRACT
Two resveratrol tetramers, (-)-vaticanol B and (-)-hopeaphenol, were isolated from acetone
extract of the tree bark of Dipterocarpus hasseltii (Dipterocarpaceae), together with the known
resveratrol trimer, (-)-α-viniferin. The structures of these compounds were established based on
spectroscopic evidence, UV, IR,
1
H-NMR,
13
C-NMR and determined by comparison with the
standard compounds. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated against murine
leukaemia P-388 cells. The IC50 values of all compounds were 42.2, 5.0 and 17.5 μg/ml,
respectively. In addition, chemotaxonomic significance relationship between Dipterocarpus, Shorea
and Vatica will also be briefly discussed.
