Abstract

Paving block is one of construction material elements that is now widely used by the society.
The quality improvement of paving block product should be conducted continuously to avoid the
product defect. The defect usually occurring in paving block includes the surface fracture and
fissure. The common way conducted to improve the quality of paving block was to add the
amount of cement into the material mix. But this may result in the higher cost of raw material.
For that reason, it was used another alternative material whose function is similar to the
cement’s. In this research the alternative material added was the rice husk ash.
The characteristics of quality that will be optimized to improve the quality of paving block are
the compressive strength and percentage of water absorption. Both characteristics were
optimized simultaneously. In order to test those two characteristics the Taguchi experiment was
conducted.
The approach used in processing data was to combine the experiment design from Taguchi
method, regression model and optimization of total quality loss function using non-linear
programming model. The data processing was conducted to obtain the optimum setting level.
The optimum setting level was the combination of level providing the number of minimum
quality loss function.
