Journal Description

ZAMKANI: Journal of Progressive Kinship, Gender Dynamics, and Islamic Socio-Legal Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal published under the auspices of the Magister Hukum Keluarga Islam (MHKI), Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). The journal is dedicated to advancing critical and progressive scholarship on Islamic family law, kinship systems, and gender dynamics within contemporary socio-legal contexts.

The term ZAMKANI, derived from the Arabic concept of zamān wa makān (time and place), reflects the journal’s foundational perspective that Islamic legal thought and family institutions must be continuously interpreted and re-examined in relation to changing historical, cultural, and social realities. In this regard, ZAMKANI promotes an academic approach that combines classical Islamic legal heritage with contemporary methodologies, interdisciplinary inquiry, and contextual reasoning.

ZAMKANI provides an international platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to explore issues related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, child protection, family welfare, women’s rights, legal pluralism, and socio-religious transformations. The journal welcomes innovative studies employing normative, empirical, socio-legal, comparative, and critical perspectives, including gender studies, legal anthropology, sociology of law, maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence.

By encouraging rigorous debate and scholarly engagement, ZAMKANI aims to contribute to the development of Islamic socio-legal studies that are responsive to modern challenges while maintaining ethical commitments to justice, human dignity, and social welfare.
