Abstract

Background: Pineapples are empirically used by the society to treat gout, and to scientifically prove it, the research was conducted to examine the anti-hyperuricemic effects of the extract of pineapples (Ananas comics (L) Merr) in white rats induced by potassium oxonate and chicken liver juice.

Method: This research was an experimental study with a complete randomized design. Animals were divided into 5 groups: negative control group (1% tween 80), positive group (27 mg/kgBW allopurinol), and group III, IV, V given pineapple extract at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kgBW, respectively. Uric acid levels were measured on days 0, 7, 14, and 21.

Results: After the treatment using pineapple extract given for 21 days, the mean percentages of decrease in uric acid levels at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kgBW were 18.61%, 27.49%, and 34.27%, respectively, and the positive control had an average of 38.16%.

Conclusion: The findings indicated that the three doses could reduce the uric acid levels in hyperuricemic rats. The optimal dose of pineapple extract that could decrease the uric acid levels was the dose of 500 mg/kgBW because it was equal to allopurinol with a significance value of 0.497.
