Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba is international peer-review journal focusing on research on global Islamic economy indicators. The journal welcomes contributions in the following topics:

These topics are chosen as part of the journal to capture substantial economic potential of the Muslim world as indicated by the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI). GIEI is a comprehensive ranking system that evaluates the development and performance of the Islamic economy across different countries. It assesses key sectors such as Islamic finance, halal food, modest fashion, halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, halal travel, and media and recreation. The index is designed to measure the readiness and strength of each country's ecosystem in fostering a robust Islamic economy, considering factors like government regulations, industry size, innovation, and consumer participation. Countries are ranked based on their ability to support and expand these sectors in alignment with Islamic principles, offering insights into market trends and investment opportunities.

Developed by DinarStandard in collaboration with various global partners, the GIEI is a strategic tool for businesses, policymakers, and investors seeking to navigate the growing halal economy. The index provides annual reports analyzing the economic potential of different nations while highlighting success stories and emerging trends. Countries such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have consistently ranked high due to their strong regulatory frameworks, well-developed Islamic financial systems, and commitment to innovation in halal industries. As global demand for ethical and Sharia-compliant products rises, the GIEI plays a critical role in shaping strategies for sustainable growth in the Islamic economy.

Since its inception, the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI) has highlighted the substantial economic value of various sectors within the Islamic economy. In 2018, Muslim consumer spending across food, pharmaceuticals, and lifestyle sectors reached approximately $2.2 trillion. By 2022, this spending had grown 9.5% year-on-year to $2.29 trillion. Islamic finance assets also saw significant growth, increasing by 7.8% to an estimated $3.6 trillion in 2021. The global Muslim market is projected to expand to about $2.8 trillion by 2025, with the halal food sector being a major contributor. The halal food market alone reached a value of $2 trillion in 2021 and is expected to grow to $3.9 trillion by 2027. These figures underscore the Islamic economy's rapid growth and economic significance across its various sectors.

The Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba is designed to capture the opportunities presented by the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI) by publishing high-quality research relevant to its key sectors, including Islamic finance, halal food, modest fashion, halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, halal travel, and Islamic media and recreation. Recognizing these sectors' rapid growth and economic significance, the journal welcomes original research articles that contribute to the academic and practical development of the Islamic economy. All submitted manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer review to ensure scholarly excellence and alignment with contemporary industry trends. Additionally, every submission is subject to editorial evaluation by the editor-in-chief, ensuring that published works maintain high academic integrity and relevance standards. The journal aims to support and drive innovation in the global Islamic economic landscape by providing a dedicated platform for research on Sharia-compliant economic practices.

Publishing Schedule

The Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba (JIELariba) publishes two issues each year, with issues released in June and December. Although the journal’s editorial schedule is set for February and August, JIELariba employs a continuous publication model: as soon as an article completes peer review and production, it is immediately posted online rather than waiting for the remainder of the issue to be finalized. This approach ensures that readers gain prompt access to the fully formatted, final version of each article.

In accordance with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, JIELariba clearly communicates its biannual publishing frequency and adheres strictly to its schedule unless exceptional circumstances arise. By consistently meeting its June and December release dates, the journal provides authors and readers with a reliable and predictable publication rhythm.

Peer Review

Every published content under “Articles” section is subject for peer review. Published contents under “Editorial” section are not peer-reviewed.

Peer review in the journal is conducted by external reviewers. They were selected based on their expertise and latest publications in the related topics of submitted manuscripts. At least two reviewers are selected for each submission. The journal didn’t ask author(s) for recommended reviewers to avoid any misconduct in peer review process. At some point, editorial board members can also be selected as reviewers of a manuscript. A list of reviewers of each edition is provided in the published issue, and a list of all reviewers is available at https://journal.uii.ac.id/JIELariba/reviewers.

Following the National Information Standards Organization (NISO)'s Peer Review Terminology Standardization, the type of peer review process in the journal can be summarized as follows:

Identity Transparency: Double Anonymized

Reviewer identity is not made visible to author, author identity is not made visible to reviewer, reviewer and author identity is visible to (decision-making) editor.

Reviewer Interacts with: Editor

Communication between editor and reviewer (traditional model). Also known as ‘independent review’. Identities can be anonymized or visible.

Review Information Published: Review Reports

Full content of the reviewer reports is published. At this moment, the journal only published review reports for accepted manuscripts from Vol. 7, No. 1, 2021.

Post Publication Commenting: Open

Commenting open to anybody. Can be anonymous, require signing in and/or registration (e.g. via ORCID). At this moment, commenting can be sent through email to editor. In the future, a “Comments” section may be prepared for this purpose.

The peer review process in the journal can be described as follow:

Each submitted article will be firstly checked by the editor-in-chief for journal standards, the relevance of topics, and plagiarism check.
When an article meets journal standard, the relevance of topics, and plagiarism check, the editor-in-chief assign a managing editor or a section editor who will send the article to at least two reviewers.
The journal applies a double-blind policy for the peer review process. The author sends the article with no knowledge of reviewers and the author's name is enclosed to reviewers.
After receiving the review results, the editor-in-chief will decide whether the article should be accepted, accepted after revision, or rejected. Reviewers will also be notified regarding this decision.
Once an article is accepted, it will be sent to a copy editor and a layout editor for the final process before publishing. During these steps, communication between author(s), editor-in-chief, copy editor, and layout editor are conducted within Open Journal Systems.

Published contents will include dates of submission, revision(s), acceptance, and publication.

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba (JIELariba) is a peer-reviewed, international open-access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality scholarly works in the domain of Islamic economics. The journal aligns itself with the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI), emphasizing the relevance of Sharia-compliant practices in today’s dynamic economic environment. It welcomes original contributions that demonstrate scholarly rigor, innovation, and relevance to contemporary Islamic economic challenges. The primary focus includes, but is not limited to, Islamic finance and banking, halal food systems, Muslim-friendly tourism, modest fashion, halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, as well as Islamic media and recreation. Articles exploring broader or emerging themes within Islamic economics that are grounded in empirical research or theoretical development are also considered.

JIELariba encourages submissions in the form of original research articles. Original research articles, typically ranging between 5,000 and 7,000 words, should present novel findings supported by rigorous methodology and substantial academic contribution.

Manuscripts should be written in fluent American English. Submissions in English are expected to follow standard academic conventions and display clarity, coherence, and grammatical precision. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to seek professional language editing before submission. Manuscripts must comply with formal and academic language rules, ensuring readability and scholarly tone. The use of inclusive and unbiased language is strongly recommended in all submissions.

Each manuscript must be structured systematically to facilitate clarity and comprehension. The essential components include a clear and concise title (no more than 15 words), the names and institutional affiliations of all contributing authors (with ORCID identifiers where possible), and a structured abstract between 150 and 250 words. The abstract should succinctly convey the purpose, methodology, principal results, and significance of the study. Authors should also provide 5 to 7 relevant keywords in alphabetical order to assist in indexing and discoverability. The main body of the article should be organized into logical sections, typically: Introduction, Literature Review, Method, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Supplementary sections such as acknowledgments and funding information may be included as necessary.

Formatting should be standardized to ensure consistency across all published works. Manuscripts must be typed in the latest version of Microsoft Word or other software using the default font, 12-point size, with double line spacing and 1.5-inch margins on all sides. The article length should range between 5.000 to 7.000 words. Authors must include page numbers and clearly distinguish headings and subheadings to aid readability. Tables, figures, and appendices should be properly labeled and referenced in the main text.

For referencing, JIELariba adheres to the APA Style (7th edition). All in-text citations and reference entries must conform to this format. References should be thorough and include all cited works, covering academic books, journal articles, credible websites, and primary sources. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their citations. To do so, using Zotero as reference management software is highly recommended. Other software, such as Mendeley, EndNote, and others, is also welcome.

All submissions must be made through the journal’s official online platform. Each manuscript undergoes a rigorous double-blind peer review by at least two qualified reviewers. The editorial team assesses initial submissions for compliance with the journal’s scope and standards. Authors will receive one of four decisions: acceptance, minor revision, major revision, or rejection. Articles requiring revision will be returned with detailed reviewer comments. Authors are expected to revise and resubmit their manuscripts promptly.

JIELariba upholds strict ethical standards in scholarly publishing. Submitted manuscripts must be original and not under consideration by any other publication. Plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, is strictly prohibited. Authors must fully disclose any financial support or potential conflicts of interest. Ethical clearance should be obtained for studies involving human subjects, and proper consent must be documented when applicable.

The journal operates under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). Authors retain copyright of their work while granting the journal the right to first publication. This license permits others to share and adapt the work for any purpose, even commercially, provided proper attribution is given and adaptations are distributed under the same license.

Starting in 2026, Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba will expand its publication frequency from two issues per year (June and December) to four issues per year, published in March, June, September, and December. Along with this change, the journal will increase its annual article capacity from 60 to 200 articles.

This strategic enhancement aims to increase the journal’s visibility and academic competitiveness, strengthening its position within the global scholarly community. By broadening publication opportunities, Journal of Islamic Economics Lariba seeks to attract more international editors, authors, and reviewers, which will serve as a vital foundation for achieving reputable international indexation.

The editorial team remains fully committed to upholding the highest standards of academic quality by ensuring a rigorous and responsible peer-review process for every manuscript published.
