Journal History
The establishment of the International Journal of Halal Industry (IJHI) originated from a strategic discussion on the development of the halal industry in Indonesia, held in 2024 by the Center for Islamic Economics Studies and Development (P3EI), Faculty of Business and Economics, Universitas Islam Indonesia. The event was led by Mohammad Bekti Hendrie Anto and involved academics, researchers, practitioners, and various stakeholders who share a concern for the rapid growth of the halal industry and the increasing need for scholarly studies to support the strengthening of the halal ecosystem, both nationally and globally. During the forum, participants highlighted that the halal industry is no longer limited to the food and beverage sector; it has expanded into various other sectors, such as halal tourism, Islamic finance, halal cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, modest fashion, logistics, and halal supply chains. However, this growth has not been matched by the availability of international scientific publication media specifically focused on interdisciplinary studies of the halal industry.
Based on the outcomes of these discussions, the participants agreed on the importance of establishing an academic dissemination platform in the form of an international journal focused on halal industry studies. This journal was expected to serve as a means of disseminating research findings, conceptual studies, policy analyses, and industrial innovations related to the development of the halal industry. Several objectives for the establishment of IJHI were subsequently formulated, namely: (1) to provide an international academic platform for academics and researchers in the field of halal industry; (2) to encourage the development of interdisciplinary research on the halal ecosystem; (3) to support evidence-based policy formulation in halal industry development; (4) to strengthen collaboration among academics, practitioners, regulators, and industry players; and (5) to enhance the visibility and global competitiveness of Indonesian halal industry research. The establishment of IJHI is also expected to support Indonesia's position as a leading center for scientific development and innovation in the global halal industry.
As a follow-up to this agreement, the Center for Islamic Economics Studies and Development (P3EI), Faculty of Business and Economics, Universitas Islam Indonesia, formed a journal formulation team tasked with preparing the journal's establishment and developing its academic framework. The journal formulation team was led by Heri Sudarsono, with members Kinanthi Putri Ardiami, Jannahar Saddam Ash Shidiqie, and Yunice Karina Tumewang. This team focused on determining the journal's scope, management structure, publication standards, and long-term development strategies. IJHI was designed as an interdisciplinary journal emphasizing studies in the halal industry, including halal business, halal supply chain management, halal certification, halal tourism, halal marketing, halal consumer behavior, Islamic finance for halal industry development, halal technology, and sustainability issues within the halal ecosystem.
One of the initial steps taken by the formulation team was to determine an appropriate journal name with international competitiveness. To ensure that the journal has a strong academic identity and global relevance, the team conducted a survey of various journals using keywords such as "halal industry," "halal business," and "Islamic industry." Additionally, the team compared the naming structures and publication characteristics of journals indexed in reputable international databases, such as Scopus and the Web of Science (WoS). This benchmarking process was carried out to ensure that the selected journal name reflects academic professionalism, international orientation, and thematic specificity. After various evaluations and discussions, the name International Journal of Halal Industry (IJHI) was finally agreed upon, as it was considered capable of representing the journal's global scope and comprehensive focus on halal industry studies.
Subsequently, the formulation team established the journal's management structure, consisting of Mohammad Bekti Hendrie Anto as Editor-in-Chief, Aidha Trisanty and Aditya Pandu Wicaksono as Managing Editors, and Kinanthi Putri Ardiami as Assistant Editor responsible for publication management and journal system operations. At the same time, the team reviewed and evaluated various journal management documents that could be adapted and developed for IJHI's needs, such as author guidelines, reviewer forms, editorial workflows, publication ethics, and article templates. All these documents were then adjusted to meet international academic publication standards and the requirements of reputable indexing agencies. To maintain publication consistency and sustainability, the team established a journal publication schedule of two issues per year, in April and October.
As a realization of these preparatory processes, the International Journal of Halal Industry (IJHI) officially launched its inaugural issue in April 2025. The first edition of IJHI published seven scientific articles from authors affiliated with various institutions and universities, both domestic and international. The presence of articles from different countries demonstrates IJHI's commitment to becoming an open, inclusive international journal capable of serving as a forum for exchanging scientific ideas on the development of the global halal industry. This inaugural publication also marks an initial step in building IJHI's reputation as an academic publication medium that contributes to the advancement of knowledge, policy, and industrial practices in the halal industry, both nationally and internationally.
