Focus and Scope

Journal Komunikasi is a peer-review journal published by Department of Communication Universitas Islam Indonesia, Yogyakarta. We welcome all contributions on the following topics:

  • Media studies
  • Mass communication and journalism 
  • Strategic communication
  • New Media

The article that uses critical theories/perspectives and encourages the spirit of empowerment would be more preferred.

Peer Review Process

 

In the first stage of review, all articles will be reviewed based on the journal's scope and Author Guidelines. Manuscripts that meet both conditions will be forwarded to the section editor. All journal manuscripts that meet these two prerequisites will be checked for plagiarism checker process through iThenticate and Turnitin. Manuscripts with a plagiarism rate of more than 20% will be rejected automatically.

After plagiarism check, Section Editors will receive the manuscripts and send it to Reviewers that had been selected by Section Editors. The manuscripts will be blindly reviewed by two experts in the field of study (double-blind review).

Final decision of publication will be made by the Editor's meeting. The decision that based on the advice of the reviewers could categorized into: (1) acceptable without revisions; (2) acceptable for publications after minor revisions; (3) acceptable for publication after major revisions; and (4) reject.

 

Publication Frequency

The journal publishes two issues in one volume a year. The issues are expected to be published in April and October of each year. Authors' manuscript submission will remain at least six months (after submitting) for reviewing process.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

 

Archiving

This journal utilizes the national library (Garuda Dikti) to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.

 

Article Processing Charges

Submission fees. There are no submission fees for Jurnal Komunikasi.

Publication fees. Upon acceptance, There are no Publication fees for Jurnal Komunikasi.

The journal funded and housed editorially by the Department of Communications, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII).

 

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.
  2. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
  3. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).

Plagiarism Check

 All articles published in the Jurnal Komunikasi will also be checked for plagiarism through iThenticate or Turnitin. Manuscripts with a more than 20% plagiarism rate will be rejected automatically.

Publication Ethics

Journal Komunikasi is a peer-reviewed journal published by Department of Communication Universitas Islam Indonesia, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in collaboration with APJIKI (Asosiasi Penerbit Jurnal Ilmu Komunikasi Indonesia) by adhering to the norms/ethics of scientific publication. Scientific publication must uphold or underly on five core of ethical values; honesty, justice, free from conflict of interestorisinality, and responsibility.

1.Honesty

Authors should uphold the honesty of scientific authorship process. It is therefore the manuscrip must be free from plagiarism (No data, text, or theory by others are presented as if they were the author's own), data manipulation, and any other kind of duplication or fabrication.

2. Justice

The articles of journal that will be published in Jurnal Komunikasi will go through a double blind review to ensure that the texts of the author are getting fair treatment. Journal managers must also respect the privileged information rights submitted by authors for articles whether they are accepted or rejected, by accepting the result of articles review on both of neither published nor rejected.

3.Free from Conflict of Interest

The manuscript has been published in our journal system should be free from conflict of interest. It is therefore the articles published require all authors should disclose the statement that publishing manuscript is free from the subtantive conflict of interest. If the research involves other parties (such as, financial support) should be mentioned or disclosed.

4.Orisinality. 

Author and managing editor of Jurnal Komunikasi should ensure that articles never be and unpublished at all.

5.Responsibility. 

All authors are listed in Jurnal Komunikasi should commited and even take responsibility for all articles are published.

 

 

Journal History

2006 -- Jurnal Komunikasi was first published in 2006. The editors were Iwan Awaluddin Yusuf (chief) and Muzayin Nazaruddin (secretary).  We had Amir Effendi Siregar, MA (Universitas Islam Indonesia); Hermin Indah Wahyuni, PhD (Universitas Gadjah Mada);  DR. Heddy Pujo Santoso (Universitas Diponegoro); DR. Dedi N Hidayat (Universitas Indonesia); and Henry Subiyakto, MA (Universitas Airlangga) as our Editorial Board and Expert. Topari, Zarkoni, and Ariyanto contributed to the circulation and distribution team.

2010 -- We thank to Mr. Topari who contributed to our circulation and distribution team. This year we congratulate Mr Topari who gain a new position in another school.

2011 -- We welcome Mr. Marjito Tri Gunawan who contributed to our circulation and distribution team and Mr. Zarkoni who became our production team. We also congratulate Mr. Ariyanto who gain a new position at our faculty.  This year (October 2011) we also redesigned our interface. When the colour of the cover was changing every published, then since October 2011 we make our consistent colour every publication. We have chosen red as our new brand guidelines since now. 

2012 -- at 2012 Mr Narayana Mahendra Prastya has become our new journal secretary/ editor at large. We thank Mr Muzayin Nazaruddin who has contributed for several years as our journal secretary since the first edition. 

2013-- We had Mr. Muzayin Nazaruddin as our new Editor in Chief and Mr. Narayana Mahendra s our secretary. Thanks to Mr. Iwan Awaluddin Yusuf who had contributed as our chief from the first edition.

2014 -- We had Mr Narayana Mahendra Prastra as our new Editor in Chief and Mr. Muzayin as our Secretary. 

2015 -- We welcome Ms Sari Cahya Masita to enrich our circulation and distribution team. We welcome Ms Sumekar Tanjung as secretary.

2016 --  We welcome Mr. Puji Rianto as our Editor in Chief and Mr Holy Rafika Dhona as secretary. Thanks to Mr Narayana Mahendra Prastya for contributing as our chief since 2014-2016.

2017-2019 -- We start digitalized all the earlier printed journal editions and got our first DOI this year. We also start our online edition with the Open Journal System (OJS) online since this period. 

2018 -- We gain our certification as journal rank for SINTA 4 from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia. The SINTA 4 rank accredited from the edition Vol 10 No 2 Tahun 2016 until Vol 15 No 1 Tahun 2020.

2020-2022 -- We welcome Mr. Puji Rianto as our Editor in Chief and Ms Sumekar Tanjung as our new Managing Editor. We Thank Mr Holy the former managing chief who started his initiation to migrate this journal online and use the OJS platform for the first time in Indonesia. We also welcome our new editors: Dr Subhan Afifi, Dr. Zulfiah Larisu, Gilang Desti Parahita, MA, Dr. Liliek B. Wiratmo, Dr. Rer. Soc. Masduki, Dr. Basuki Agus Suparno. We also welcome Mr. Pambudi Wicaksono as our Journal Administrator and secretary. Pambudi Wicaksono, As'ad Royan, and Erdina Trisna have reorganized the new discipline of the OJS system online and totally online migration. Mr Puji Rianto, Sumekar Tanjung, and Pambudi Wicaksono declared a brand new tradition of journal system consisting of (1) OJS based journal, (2) double-blind review, (3) similarity check to control plagiarism, (4) the usage of Mendeley reference manager, (5) high standard publication ethics.  

2020 -- We gain our certification as journal rank for SINTA 2 from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia. The SINTA 2 rank accredited from the edition Vol 14 No 2 Tahun 2020 until Vol 19 No 1 Tahun 2025.

2020 -- Jurnal Komunikasi goes to rebranding. Logos are still, but the interface of the covers is designed with new brand colours such as a combination of orange, brown, and red as our core colour. The rebranding also makes some changes to Style Sheet. We make a lot of changes to improve the new quality of journal editing. The improvisation on this edition is: (1) making article info for recording the article history, (2) redesigning the layout of the article.

2021-2022-- We introduce our new features such as (1) Crossmark symbol at the manuscript, (2) Orcid ID for the author and article, (3) system migration from the OJS 2 to the OJS 3 version which gives us a better quality of indexing and interface, (4) we also receive more English manuscript.

2023- We welcome our new editors: Ratna Noviani, Ph.D and Dr. Hapsari Dwiningtyas Sulistyani. We also welcome Dr. Subhan Afifi as our new managing editor and thank Ms Sumekar Tanjung who accompanied us to gain the SINTA 2 journal rank.
